Handles Specifications and Manufacturing
Foreword
The
Indian Standard for door handles, now in its fifth revision, has been adopted
by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Previous revisions were made in 1965, 1972,
1979, and 1987. This latest revision reflects practical experience, updates to
referenced standards, and changes in dimensions and sampling clauses.
The
technical committee responsible for this standard is listed in Annex C.
Compliance is assessed by rounding off the final values according to IS 2:
1960.
Door Handles - Specification
1. Scope
This
standard defines the requirements for the materials, manufacture, dimensions,
and finish of door handles. It applies to handles commonly fixed to doors.
2. References
Essential
Indian Standards are listed in Annex A and are integral to this standard.
3. Types
Door
handles are categorized by material:
- Type 1: Cast iron, malleable cast
iron, cast brass, cast aluminium, or zinc alloy die-casting.
- Type 2: Mild steel.
- Type 3: Brass or aluminium alloy.
- Type 4: Cast brass, aluminium alloy
pressure die casting, and extruded aluminium alloy.
4. Materials
Materials
must conform to the standards outlined in Table 1:
- Mild Steel: Grade 0 of IS 1079: 1994.
- Cast Brass: LCB 2 of IS 292: 1983.
- Aluminium Alloy: Designation 5230 of IS 617:
1975.
5. Manufacture
Door
handles should be well-made, free from defects, and correctly shaped. They must
have a smooth finish. Cast handles should be free from casting defects, and
mechanically joined handles should be as strong as integrally cast ones.
6. Dimensions and Tolerances
The
dimensions and tolerances of door handles must follow Tables 2A and 2B, with
specific tolerances provided.
7. Finish
Finishes
vary by type:
- Type 1: Bright satin, nickel
chromium plated, or copper oxidized.
- Type 2 & 3: Stove enamelled black.
- Type 4: Bright satin, nickel
plated, or anodized aluminium.
8. Sampling and Criterion for Conformity
Sampling
methods and criteria ensure that door handles meet the specified dimensions and
finish. A lot is considered conforming if the number of defective handles does
not exceed the allowable limit.
9. Marking
Each door
handle must be marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark. The product
may also bear the Standard Mark as governed by BIS regulations.
10. Packing
Door
handles should be packed in cartons with labels indicating the manufacturer’s
details, type, size, and quantity.
